Question 1 of 4
Let your hair air-dry without any product. What shape does it take?
The four hair types
Hair type describes the shape your hair takes on its own, without styling. Most people fall into one of four groups.
- Straight hair
- Your hair falls straight from root to tip. Natural oils travel down the strand easily, so lightweight products and regular washing keep it from looking flat.
- Wavy hair
- Your hair forms loose S-shaped waves. Light, hydrating products that do not weigh waves down help them hold their shape.
- Curly hair
- Your hair forms defined curls or ringlets. Curls tend to run dry, so gentle cleansing, rich conditioning and a styler for definition usually work well.
- Coily hair
- Your hair forms tight coils or zig-zags and shrinks a lot as it dries. It is the most prone to dryness, so rich moisture, gentle cleansing and protective styles are the usual focus.
Questions about the hair type quiz
How do I find out my hair type?
Wash your hair, skip styling products and let it air-dry. The shape it takes is your natural pattern. The quiz walks you through what to look for.
Can I have more than one hair type?
Yes. Many people have looser waves on top and tighter curls underneath. Answer for the pattern that covers most of your hair.
Why does the quiz ask about strand thickness?
Thickness does not change your type, but it changes how much product your hair can take. Fine hair often prefers lighter products than coarse hair.
Is this a professional hair analysis?
No. It is a short self-assessment that points you in a direction. It is not a diagnosis or professional advice.
