Question 1 of 5
How long does your hair take to air-dry after washing?
Low, medium and high porosity
Porosity describes how easily water and products get into the hair strand and how long they stay there. There are three types.
- Medium porosity
- Your hair takes in moisture and holds it reasonably well. Most products work for you. Regular conditioning keeps that balance.
- Low porosity
- Your hair cuticles lie flat, so moisture has a hard time getting in and products tend to sit on top. Lightweight, water-based products usually work better than heavy butters.
- High porosity
- Your hair takes in moisture quickly and loses it just as fast, often after coloring, bleaching or heat styling. Richer conditioners, leave-ins and sealing oils are the usual choice.
Questions about the hair porosity test
What is hair porosity?
Hair porosity is how easily your hair absorbs moisture and how well it holds on to it. It is usually described as low, medium or high.
Is the glass of water test accurate?
The float test is popular, but oil, product residue and water temperature all change how a strand floats. This quiz asks about how your hair behaves day to day instead.
Can my hair porosity change?
It can. Bleaching, coloring and frequent heat styling are common reasons hair moves towards high porosity. Take the test again if your routine changes.
Is this a professional hair analysis?
No. It is a short self-assessment that points you in a direction. It is not a diagnosis or professional advice.
